Since we are officially half way through the year (please don’t panic), I thought it was a good idea to cover some basics on Goal Setting so you can be sure you reach your 2016 goals THIS YEAR 🙂
Which is the best way to do Goal Setting? This is one of the most basic questions I receive when I start working with a new client, it all seems to be so simple, but I honestly believe that most of us skip this step in many areas of our life.
Since I am into fitness, I’m just going to cover Goal Setting for health and fitness, but know that I highly recommend that you do the same steps for the other important areas such as Finances, Family, Relationships, Career, Spiritual, and Personal Growth or Intellectual. You may name those areas differently, but you get the idea.
Goal setting starts with a simple question:
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE AND BY WHEN?
Simple right? But I still get the majority of my clients with an answer like: “I want to lose weight” and many don’t even have a number in mind.
You see, saying that you need to lose weight might mean one pound in one year, its so vague that anyone can actually achieve it in a given time. The problem is that you may not be able to achieve YOUR real goal ever.
I believe that part of the problem might be not being able to have clarity of your goals, add lack of a structured goal setting session in place, along with a weekly review to measure your progress.
So what are my guidelines for Goal Setting?
1. Your goals have to be realistic. If I wanted to fly, I know that no matter what I did, that goal will never happen. I know I just can’t fly! No matter how much I wish I could. I also know that if I set a goal so unrealistic I will set myself up for failure.
A goal should be big enough that it scares you, but realistic enough that you know that with a little push and enough focus you can achieve.
Example: I will lose 2 lbs per week until I reach my goal of 20 lbs in 10 weeks by ______. -And you MUST put a date-
2. It has to be specific and measurable. So you can definitely measure your weight every week can’t you? You may not reach your 2 lbs a weeks some times, but you can always restructure and refocus, so you can be sure you continue on the right path.
3. Goals must have a time limit. Without a time frame, I don’t think a goal could ever be achieved. See, I have been trying to write a book, but that has just been a dream. Do you know when that dream will become a goal? Right now, I will commit to writing ONE CHAPTER EACH WEEK. And have a finalized script by December 2016. There you have it, now I can call it a goal.
Add a layer of accountability and share your goals with the people who care about you, you will be surprised at how much support you will receive, and some people may even join you!
Back to the 2 lbs a week goal, this person will achieve the ultimate goal of 20 lbs in 10 weeks, now we’re talking!!
4. They must come from YOU, and you must write them down. Keep them in a place where you can constantly see them.
Most importantly, you MUST track your progress. My coach (yes, I have one too!) has me write down my quarterly goals, my year goals and even my 5-year goals… But she also has me send her my weekly intentions (action goals) so I can for sure reach my personal goals in a timely matter.
So, what now?
Well, I thought I should offer… Are you ready?!
